SKIP Barts is situated at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in the heart of East London. We were established in 2008 and underwent a research project to find our first project in Rajasthan, India.

For three years, we worked with the Bal Ashram – a home for rescued child slaves and labourers. The organisation aimed to rehabilitate these vulnerable children back into society.

Our Project

Previously, our work involved teaching subjects concerning health and society, as well as arranging excursions for teaching workshops, which allowed the children to communicate using the knowledge they had gained. We also taught teachers and staff more advanced topics surrounding health, in order to sustain our work with the children. We bolstered the curriculum already in place with health promotion workshops. Topics explored included sanitation, healthy eating, vitamin deficiencies, puberty and sexual health, dental hygiene, infectious diseases and drug use.

The Future

At SKIP Barts, we are beginning a new chapter, as we aim to research for a new NGO that could benefit from our support. We are looking to partner with an NGO in India. This year, we will be conducting a research trip with a view to piloting a project in the summer of 2016.

As we are currently in a transition period and finding a new NGO to work with, we will be working on researching during the year and then sending volunteers out to our chosen country to do further research on the ground. Only then will we be able to plan interventions for the new project.

We are well known at our medical school for the Big Annual show that we put on. Past shows have included ‘Barts Got Talent’, speed dating, pageant shows and club nights. Our funds from these ventures have been augmented by cake sales and bag packs!
